Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for 300 hours per year in Years 7 to 10.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

In Year 11 and 12, courses available include:

  • Community and Family Studies
  • Exploring Early Childhood
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
  • Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation Studies.

Personal Development, Health and  Physical Education

The teachers of the PDHPE are dedicated professionals constantly working to engage students whilst being strong advocates for health and wellbeing. The experienced staff offers a range of teaching strategies in order to enhance the educational outcomes for all students in both movement and health lessons. The team pride themselves on their strength with building relationships to foster a safe and supportive environment for all students at Francis Greenway High School. The movement component for students aims to increase the amount of time they are engaged in physical activity for maximum health benefit. Not only do we aim to foster positive life-long habits, we also provide as many opportunities for the students to participate in a variety of activities in order to promote the importance of physical activity in all facets.

The PDHPE Faculty further engage students through elective courses such as Physical Activity and Sports Studies and HSC PDHPE. These courses continue to teach students about the health, fitness and sporting industry, the health of Australians, the fundamentals of biomechanics and anatomy whilst also delving into the organisational structure of the business and administration aspect.

Opportunities that extend beyond the classroom include such excursions as the Ski Trip in which students who chose elective subjects are invited to   attend, outdoor education camps, swim school opportunities, knock out teams, cross country, athletic and swimming carnivals and a variety of    challenge excursions such as Raw Challenge or fun runs. Furthermore, we have strong partnerships with the University of Newcastle, Beresfield Swimming Pool,  Partner Primary Schools, Beresfield Golf Club and Beresfield Bowling Club.

We are all advocates for our trade and demonstrate passion for teaching, learning and the students at Francis Greenway High School. Our faculty goals illustrate the importance for us to provide the most effective and engaging educational experience we can to benefit every type of learner in our classrooms.
