Languages

In NSW high schools, languages is a key learning area.

Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.

The study of a language is compulsory for 100 hours in one continuous school year from Year 7 to Year 10, but preferably in Years 7 or 8.

In Years 11 and 12, NSW schools offer a wide variety of languages, catering for beginning students to background speakers.

Stage 4

The study of a language is compulsory for 100 hours in one continuous school year from Year 7 to Year 10, but preferably in Years 7 or 8.

At FGHS, Year 7 students study Japanese language and culture. The aim of this course is to encourage a love of language learning in all students. It aims to give each student second language learning strategies, focussing on Japanese, which they can apply to the acquisition of any language of their choosing.

Stage 6 - Japanese Beginners

The Preliminary and HSC courses provide students with the opportunity to develop their linguistic and inter cultural knowledge and understanding, and the speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to communicate in Japanese. Topics covered provide contexts in which students develop their communication skills in Japanese and their knowledge and understanding of language and culture.
